Curt Fukuda

Documentarian/Archivist

Curt Fukuda grew up in the Santa Clara Valley. He remembers when the area was filled with farms, orchards, and berry patches; when the air was tart with the smell of stewed tomatoes during the canning season. Curt graduated from San Jose State University with a BA in Radio-TV- Film. He has worked as a filmmaker, commercial photographer, exhibiting artist, writer, graphic designer, and instructor. His photographs have been exhibited nationally, and in Mexico and Germany. In 1998, Edward James Olmos invited Curt to photograph for the Americanos! exhibition, which opened at the Smithsonian National Museum of History. Curt has appeared on television and radio, including having lunch with Anthony Bourdain on the CNN “Parts Unknown” series. Additionally, Curt co- authored three books: “Cuentos del Día de los Muertos” with Salvador Gonzalez (1997), “Día de los Muertos – When Two Worlds Meet” with Dr. Shawn Haley (2004), and “San Jose Japantown – A Journey” with Ralph M. Pearce (2014). Curt lives in Mountain View with his wife, Monica Smith, and children Richard and Eileen. He is currently working with the Japanese American Museum of San Jose, and writing a book of dark fiction.
